Dear madam,
Let me have the liberty of introducing myself.Like you, I
am Indian and an admirer of Indian music.I live in India,in state

a state govt. company near Chandigarh. Madam, I visited your site
Raagmala and found it very interesting the way you introduce
Indian Raags to people ,specially through popular hindi
songs.Similar to your data on web, I have collected a large
amount of data of hindi songs based on Raags.I donot have
training on Indian Classical music.Music has been my hobby right
from childhood, but I never had anopportunity to learn Indian
Classical music. My data is based on various music books
,periodicals, radio programmes,TV programmes and interviews of
famous Music directors, journalists, performers.I have collected it
over many years of hard labour.I am sending you some songs based
on raag Darbari Kanhara. Some of them might be already on your web
site. Madam, I will be happy to correspond to you on this subject
further. My interest is Hindi & other popular as well as
Lokgeets based on Indian Raags. As this is a simple way to know
vast Indian Heritage hidden in raags, which no country in this
world can boast of.I am proud of Indian Classical Music. I
sincerely hope that you,as a highly learned & talented
artist, will help me and continue dialog with me.

Hello,
I am interested in taking Kathak lessons, but have had no
previous experience in learning traditional Indian music or
dance. I am wondering if you offer any beginner
classes. If so, would you please send me the
schedules, and perhaps an estimate of the costs?
Thank you,

Dear Gargi,
Congrats on the great work you have done to set up this page. I
have just been given the address and am going thru it slowly as
there is a lot of content! Will be pleased to help with info as
and when I can. A word of advice from you - have you considered
adding real music to your site? It would
be a real asset.

Hello Gargi,
I enjoyed visiting your informative page on Indian Classical
ragas. You have done a great job by including raga based songs of
Kazi Nazrul on your home page ( I didn't see it in any other
webpage). It would be nice if you could put some Rabindra Sangeet
based on Ragas. I'll visit your page again in future.
Thanks a lot.

Dear Ms. Bagchi,
My name is Nariman, and I am in Bombay. My wife is a musician
("western" choral music) and conductor. Very
often, Indian composers write music especially for us, like
Vanraj Bhatia, and often use Hindustaani Raag, or Carnatic
systems. I happened on your site while searching
for notations of various raags, and stumbled by accident on to a
MOST useful mine of knowledge, very easily explained. Especially
useful were the midi-files of the thaats. BUT, Kalyan COULD
NOT BE FOUND!!! I realised that some of the raags in the
raagmaalaa are not alphabetically listed, so I went looking up
and down; but Kalyan (or Kalyani ??) eludes me. This is NO
complaint; of course not! I just thought I should point it out to
you. We
shall be visiting your site often, I think.... So till then,
accept our sincerest congratulations.

Hope you help me in this regard.

Dear madam,
I have certain comments on the list of various songs based
on hindustani ragas. First of all i want to congratulate
you for your wonderful efffort. The lists for tagore songs, hindi
film songs and nazrul songs is really extensive. But i have
certain queries regarding the classification of the songs.
First of all i am ready to admit that while putting tune to
lyrics and getting it sung by the playback singers, it may
not be always possible to keep the form of the raga as pure as it
is done in a standard classical rendition and in
certain cases a certain amount of deviation from the standard
scale is also permissible. But in certain cases the catch
phrases, the vadi and samavadi swaras and certain other definite
characteristics are completely ignored in the tunes. Only the
scale matches with some raga. My question is whether it is
advisable to call that song to be based on that raga. For example
take the song "Adha hai chandrama". Although the scale
might match that of malkauns, it nevertheless bears little
resemblence to the aforementioned raga with respect to the
movement, pakad and other characteristics. As another instance
the song "Raina biti jaye" bears little resemblence to
Todi in the respect of movement as well as mood. In the same way
the song "Mohobbot ki jhooti kahani" does not bear much
of a likeness to jounpuri. The song "Tere naina talash kar
hame" also falls in the same category, it does not
have the distinctive elongated "pa -re " meend which
any chhayanat composition must be having. In this cases will it
be right to classify the songs the way they have been done?
Anyway, i am not sure about any of the songs mentioned above as i
myself am a novice in these things. I only raised my doubts and i
hope you will not be offended.
With best regards,
Soumen

Dear Sir,
Your efforts to list all the
Indian ragas are appreciated. I hope you will add more ragas to the
list sush as Bageshwari, Kedara etc. Also it will be good if all the
ragas' ascending and discending notes are made listenable through
the MIDI player.

Dear Gargi,
Good job so far. There are still hundreds of songs out there which are
not on your list. I believe it would be a good idea to list them for your
viewers with a clickable page titled "list of the unknowns" or
some such. May be some of them can find the raag or take the list to some
expert they know.
That is it for now . If you think this is a good idea I will work
on lists of Gazals, Bhajans and other songs.

It really is a great site. I, being a student
and an avid music lover myself, liked your site a lot. I don't
have a lot of knowledge in Indian classical music yet, but there
is a small thing that caught my eyes. I would appreciate if you
would verify. I do realize it's hard to spell Hindi words in
English. The name "Majh Khamaj" seems
different than what I knew it to be. I thought it was Manjh
Kamaj. Again, I don't know much to go around pointing out
spellings of Raags. I don't to be offensive in any way.
The tone of my letter is meant to be as humble as a student of
music could sound. Again, you did a great job. I will
visit you from time to time for updates, so that I can enhance my
knowledge in this field. By the way I am trying to learn Santoor.
So far my teacher is Pundit Shivkumar Sharma's numerous Albums
(unfortunately, for me, not HE himself in person).
If you have any suggestions for me or any information I would
greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much.

Gargijee, I just started looking for Indian classical music
site on Internet and when I came across your site my eyes was
wide opened you have taken so much time and done a great job for
collecting and indexing all info together. One request if you
incorporate some sound in real audio that will be great.
Congratulation and you have done a great service to Indian
classical music.

Dear Ms B.,
When I first saw your site about a year ago, I didn't know
anything about Indian classical music. But when I saw the songs I
knew all my life categorized under Ragas, I made an effort to
find as many of those songs as possible and made cassettes for
each Raga.
I then began to recognize the melodious patterns of many ragas. I
can now see that just as the eyes can recognize shades of mauve
and magenta or the nose can recognize fragrance of rose or
sandalwood apart, the ear can unequivocally recognize the notes
of 'Charukeshi' or 'Kalavati'...and this recognition
pattern extends beyond songs. Now I can recognize these ragas in
instrumental music albums or concerts too. I no longer catch my
self thinking that 'Bhairavi' or 'Bhimpalasi' sound just the same
to me.
I visit your site every few months and can see that you continue
your effort to enhance the already impressive collection.
Thanks for your effort.
